Thursday, April 6, 2023 / News ASA Members from Across the Country Advocate in Washington D.C. Last Week Last week, with the Capitol being more accessible after almost three years of increased restrictions, 25 ASA members from across the country descended on Washington to help advocate for issues important to the PHCP/PVF industry. After a successful, virtual legislative fly-in at the end of 2021, ASA advocates took full advantage of in-person meetings to promote our industry before Senators, Representatives, and key staff alike. To start things off, members received an issue briefing that covered the current state of industry-related proposals in both houses of Congress, the best way to present these measures, and the best times of year to invite their Senators and Representatives to visit their facilities. Some of these issues included keeping current corporate tax rates, protecting LIFO inventory valuation, protecting family-owned businesses from increased estate taxes, and water quality legislation. Later, a welcome dinner featuring keynote speaker John Feehery - a longtime Washington insider, cable news pundit, and contributor to The Hill newspaper – gave a “behind the scenes” overview of the current political situation on Capitol Hill and answered questions spanning the budget, tax proposals, and the 2024 Election Cycle. The next morning, after an ample breakfast to help fuel the day, ASA members took to the Hill, meeting not only with their respective members from their home states, but also had special meetings with friends to our industry like Sen. Ted Budd (R-NC) and Rep. Rudy Yakym (R-IN), who took time to meet with ASA advocates and not only listen and take questions, but to offer their insights on legislative status and current support. With close to 40 legislative offices visited, ASA members made an immediate impact during a critical period in the legislative process. Next Spring, ASA plans to return to Washington to further its legislative and regulatory agenda with the help of our members. More details to come.
