Thursday, August 8, 2024 / News Podcast: The Global Stock Sell-Off: Are ASA Members Impacted? On the most recent episode of the “Keeping it Real with Dr. Kuehl” economic update podcast for ASA members, this week Dr. Kuehl talks to members about the latest news on the global stock-sell off and if there is a direct impact on ASA members. ASA Chief Economist Dr. Kuehl started off the podcast by telling members that this sell-off is not necessarily Armageddon, but it will have some effect on ASA members. This started a few weeks back with the AI revolution. Chris said that the triggers are high expectations. The manufacturing sector had a huge investment period. Two things happened… one: there was an implementation period, it doesn’t mean things automatically work… this takes a few weeks to complete. People have the materials and the machines, but they don’t know what to do with it. And the second thing that affects technology is that prices have gone up for this technology. It doesn’t fit into people’s budget anymore. Chris ends the podcast by saying that the markets are shaken up. This cascades into what the Fed will do… the signals are showing a slow economy, and a weakening labor market. This provokes the Fed to lower rates in September or December. Dr. Kuehl produces three free economic update podcasts each month for ASA members (on Friday mornings). The podcasts are available in the MyASA portal at www.asa.net/myasa and through all traditional podcast hosting platforms.
